Guide for Parents

You want your child to be successful and to feel happy and hopeful while they’re with us. We put effort into making this happen. If parents and the college work well together we can help make the big step from school to college successful – we’re here to help things go smoothly.

Open evenings are a chance to see what’s on offer for your children and meet our staff. Also subject-based parents’ evenings at the start of the school year will give you more information on the course and what’s coming next.

Success for your child

Did you know that many of our students go onto university, including Russell Group universities? And many go onto further training or into work. We’ve arranged excellent placements for apprentices and opportunities for work experience in industry-focused courses so there's plenty of focus on getting your child ready for the next step.

In 2015/16:

  • Our students had 100% pass rate in Level 3 diplomas in:

               Health and Social Care
               Beauty Therapy
               Medical Science
               Vehicle Maintenance

  • Nine out of ten of all Level 3 students achieved their qualifications
  • BCoT apprentices performed 15% above the national average (we’re the largest apprenticeship provider in north Hampshire).

Follow your child's progress

We give students an individual learning plan and regular tutorials to keep them on track.

The online Parent Portal gives you up-to-date information on:

  • Timetables
  • Attendance
  • Grades – including progress against targets
  • Reports from your child’s tutors
  • Results and qualifications

It’s a great way to check your child is on track with their studies.

Please note, if your child turns 18 during their course, they have the option to remove your access to the Parent Portal.

Great learning spaces and environment

Our sites have excellent facilities – many of our technical skill areas are kitted out with things that you would expect to see in a professional workspace – so students learn in a real-world environment. Your child will use online and digital tools in the classroom and library – and can use many of these from home too.

And there are plenty of spaces for students to relax and make friends in of course.

Good attendance is key to keeping students focused on their learning goals – all research shows that higher attendances leads to higher achievement. Please support your child to attend all their lessons, tutorials and placements.

There are times when your child can’t come to college, you should notify the school area if this happens. If not, the absence will be unauthorised and may lead to a disciplinary process. Numbers for the school areas are on our contact us page.

Financial help

Money shouldn’t be a barrier to learning but we know not all families find it easy. Remember that Free College Meals are available for some students, and our Welfare Team might be able to help manage payments for trips, books, etc. Please talk to us as we have experience in working with benefits and different funds and bursaries.

Support for your child

Being a young person today faces new challenges that parents may not have faced themselves. Our Welfare Team is here to help and can offer confidential help to students in many areas. We want our students to know that they don’t need to face things alone.

Please support our commitment to good attendance, punctuality and meeting deadlines.
