What is ELCAS?
ELCAS is the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELC), designed to promote lifelong learning amongst members of the Armed Forces. The scheme provides financial support in the form of a single up-front payment in each of a maximum of three separate financial years. ELC funding is only available for pursuit of higher level learning i.e. for courses that result in a nationally recognised qualification at Level three or above on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (England, Northern Ireland and Wales), a Level six or above on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) or, if pursued overseas, an approved international equivalent qualification with an approved learning provider.
How can I ‘spend’ my ELCAS credits at BCoT?
Once you have decided, you need to apply for the course in the usual way; in most cases, this will be via our friendly Part Time Enrolment team. You can phone them on 01256 306484 or call in to our South Site between the following times: Mon-Thurs 9am-4.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm.
They will take a copy of your ELCAS credit letter and completed Enrolment or Application form and pass it to our Student Records team, who will manage the funding application for you. Once this has been approved by ELCAS, we will notify you of your course start date.
Can I use my ELCAS credits to part-fund a course, if my course costs more than my credit allowance?
Yes, you are welcome to part-fund courses yourself too.
Please follow the application instructions above, but remember to have details of how you are paying the balance to hand.
What if my course is at a lower level than ELCAS allow?
Get in touch with our Part Time Enrolment team; depending on your prior qualifications, some courses may be eligible for funding anyway, and we can advise you on that.
We also have an instalment plan if you want to pay for a course yourself; please ask the team for details.
