The course offers a broad programme which allows students to gradually specialise and then to decide on a particular area.
It enables them to take advantage of an exceptional placement record, develop an appropriate folder of work and gain a nationally recognised qualification (ABC Diploma).
The programme is divided into three stages: 'Exploratory', which includes a broad experimental approach to consolidate your discipline, 'Pathway', and 'Confirmatory' where students will work on a final project in their chosen specialism.
Initially students follow an intensive period of bridging studies which is centred on drawing and developing research skills. This visual studies programme provides students with enough flexibility to explore their own potential in specific areas of the department and to gradually specialise in their preferred discipline.
During stage two students will develop their visual and practical skills through a range of project based activities in specialist workshops and studios: Painting, Drawing and Sculpture 3D design, Ceramics and Glass, Graphic Design and Digital Processes, Screen Printing, Fashion, Printed Textiles, Knitted and Woven Textiles, Photography and Video. The practical work is complemented by contextual studies. These theoretical studies provide for a critical understanding of Art and Design and its function in society.
Two A Levels, or 1 A Level plus 3 GCSEs at grade C or above. You must show enthusiasm for the subject supported by a portfolio of work demonstrating your creative ability.
The course is continuously assessed through assignments, projects and case studies. Students will develop a responsible and co-operative approach to working on their own and in groups. The course uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with local business wherever possible.
Most students progress onto a Degree or Higher National Diploma course in Art and Design (average 98% per year).
