Course Overview

This course is aimed at learners who want to develop their existing qualifications, skills and knowledge of Early Years practice and who may want to progress onto a degree level course.

The aims of this course are to:

  • To provide education and training for a range of careers in the Early Years Sector
  • To provide the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners in the field of Early Years care and Education
  • To provide opportunities to gain a nationally recognised level 5 vocationally specific qualification

This two year Early Years related course consists of the following units:

Year 2

Effective Resource Management
Effective Leadership 
Managing the Inspection
Working with Families 
Contemporary Issues in Child Health
Environmental Issues for the Early Years


To achieve the BTEC Higher National Certificate all 10  (first year) units must be achieved; to achieve the BTEC Higher National Diploma all 16 units must be achieved.

Learners who do not hold a ‘full and relevant’ practitioner status are required to complete 800 hours of work placement. They should complete 400 hours in relation to Unit 9: Professional Practice and 400 hours in relation to Unit 1: Continuing Development.

Learners who already hold a ‘full and relevant’ practitioner status from the BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Early Years programme (or other recognised qualification) must demonstrate competence by completing 400 hours of work experience in relation to Unit 1: Continuing Development. They must also complete a reflective log which demonstrates how they have met and continue to meet assessment criteria for Unit 9: Professional Practice.

Entry Requirement

Must be aged 18 or over
Hold a relevant Level 3 qualification and/or
Relevant work experience
Successful interview with course leader
GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above
For international students there is an ESOL requirement/IELTS score of 6 (minimum of 5.5 across every element).


You will be assessed through a variety of methods including assignments, peer assessment, presentations, practical activities in placement/workplace and observation of Health Promotion Project in placement/workplace.

Where does this course lead to

Once you have completed this course you can move directly into employment or potentially join the second year of a relevant degree programme at a university offering a compatible course.
