BCoT awarded College of Sanctuary status
BCoT is delighted to announce that we have been awarded College of Sanctuary status
At BCoT we go above and beyond to create a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment for all students, staff, and members of the local community. Our efforts are helping to raise awareness about the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers but also providing them with the support they need to thrive.
We are proud to share the values and commitment to social justice of the Colleges of Sanctuary and believe in providing equal opportunities for everyone. That’s why we have a dedicated ESOL programme for 16-19-year-olds and adult learners. Offering ESOL courses for asylum seekers and refugees is crucial to help them integrate into their new country. Language is a fundamental aspect of communication, and without it, individuals may struggle to access basic services, find employment, and form relationships with others.
Our ESOL courses provide a safe and supportive environment for these students to learn English, improve their communication skills, and gain confidence in using the language. They not only provide language skills but also offer a sense of community and support for individuals who may have experienced trauma and displacement. They provide an opportunity for individuals to meet others in similar situations, share experiences, and build friendships. Furthermore, ESOL courses can help individuals understand the culture and customs of their new country, which is essential for successful integration.
Alumnus Gabriel Mingati D Pereira recently celebrated a grade 4 in English. He completed his English GCSE after taking the college’s ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages) course. He joined the College five years ago, speaking very little English. Through hard work and perseverance, he completed all the courses on a part-time basis and now is studying sport at Chichester University.
He said: “BCoT probably saved my life. I did not have a place when I came here aged 16. At the time, I didn’t really know what to do, but then I came here, and they accepted me. The courses were very challenging at the beginning, but I made friends and with the lectures support, I have learnt so much. I’m so happy to receive these grades, and I am looking forward to the future.”
In April 2022, we showed our unwavering support for asylum seekers and refugees by providing free English courses to Ukrainian refugees. We went the extra mile by organising coffee mornings to help them connect with other agencies like the job centre and local authority. This also provided a good opportunity to interact with other Ukrainians and host families, creating a sense of community that is vital to their wellbeing. We also spearheaded a donation drive to provide much-needed essentials for Ukraine, a country that has been through a lot in recent times.
Anthony Bravo, Principal of Basingstoke College of Technology said: “We understand that displacement due to war and conflict can be an extremely traumatic experience for individuals, families, and communities. The loss of homes, possessions, and loved ones can leave lasting scars. The current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine has brought this home. However, we want to assure those who arrive in Basingstoke that we welcome them. Our skilled team is here to support with education and training, and we have strong community connections to help individuals and families navigate the challenges of resettlement.”
