Course Introduction

This is year one for a two-year course. Successful completion of year one will allow progression to year two.


The BTEC vocational qualification is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, understanding, and practical skills needed for a successful animal care and management career.

This course is ideal for individuals who:

  • Have a passion for animals and are interested in working in the animal care and management sector.
  • Enjoy practical learning and hands-on experience.
  • Want to develop a broad range of transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
  • Are aiming for direct employment in the animal care sector or further study in animal-related disciplines.

You will cover a range of units including:

  • Animal Welfare and Ethics (Exam)
  • Practical Animal Husbandry 
  • Animal Behaviour 
  • Animal Health and Diseases 
  • Work Experience in the Animal Sector
  • Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English and maths.
  • Successful completion of a relevant level 2 qualification.

Most of the course is continuously assessed through assignments, projects and case studies; there will be one unit assessed by examination.

You will develop a responsible and co-operative approach to working on your own and in groups. The course uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with local businesses wherever possible.

Successful completion of this course opens up a variety of exciting progression pathways for your future including higher education, a related apprenticeship or employment.
