Course Introduction
The T Level in Animal Care and Management is a two-year, technical qualification that is equivalent to three A Levels. It is designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need to enter a career in the animal care sector, such as veterinary nursing, zookeeping, or animal welfare.
The course is split into three main parts:
- Core Knowledge and Skills: This section covers the essential knowledge and skills that all animal care professionals need, such as animal husbandry, nutrition, welfare, and health and safety.
- Occupational Specialism: This section allows students to choose a specialist pathway, such as Companion Animal Care, Livestock Care, or Zoo Animal Care. In this section, students will learn the specific skills and knowledge that are needed to work with their chosen type of animal.
- Industry Placement: Students will complete a 45-day industry placement with an employer. This placement will give them the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the animal care sector and to put into practice the skills and knowledge they have learned in the classroom.
Occupational specialism:
Students will choose one of the following occupational specialisms:
• Companion Animal Care
• Livestock Care
• Zoo Animal Care
In the occupational specialism, students will learn the specific skills and knowledge that are needed to work with their chosen type of animal. This may include:
- The anatomy and physiology of the animals
- Their behaviour and welfare needs
- Common diseases and injuries
- Feeding and nutrition
- Housing and enrichment
Students will also learn about the relevant industry legislation and regulations.
In addition to the core knowledge and skills and occupational specialism, students will also complete a 45-day industry placement. This placement will give them the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the animal care sector and to put into practice the skills and knowledge they have learned in the classroom.

T Levels are a post-GCSE option. To qualify, you'll need:
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths.
- Successful completion of the Level 2 Animal Care Certificate.
The T Level in Animal Care and Management is assessed using a variety of methods, including:
- External exams: Students will sit two external exams, one covering the core knowledge and skills and one covering the occupational specialism.
- Internal assessments: Students will complete a range of internal assessments, such as practical tasks, presentations, reports, portfolios, essays etc.
- Employer-led project: Students will complete a project set by an employer during their industry placement.
