Our Level 1 equivalent, Future Pathways is a one-year course aimed at 16–17 year olds straight from school.
As well as helping you achieve your GCSE English and maths qualifications, you will learn employability skills, undertake 35 hours of work experience, and get the opportunity to try different courses every half-term up until Easter, at which point you can then choose the subject you would like to study at Level 2.
The Future Pathways programme will have timetabled activities for about 18 hours each week during term time. This will include Maths, IT and English classes, tutorial time and around five hours each week in your chosen technical skill area. Your timetable will also include work experience hours and employability activities; BCoT will support you in finding an appropriate placement.
English and maths will be your core learning aims, to help you progress in whatever you’d like to do in the future.
We expect all students to attain a Level 2 standard (GCSE grade 4/C) in English language and maths. If a student comes to us with a 3/D grade in either subject, they will be expected to retake their GCSE in that subject. If they have an 2/E grade or lower, we will ask them to take Functional Skills as a stepping stone towards achieving their GCSE.
Everyone knows that good English and Maths results are required for many jobs, courses and further education opportunities; we are committed to supporting every one of our students to achieve grade C or above in English and maths. This is in line with Government policy and we ask parents and guardians to stand alongside us in ensuring that their young person attends every lesson.
If you want to, you can change your choice of technical skill every half term up until Easter, so you could try up to four different career areas.
For the final term, from Easter up to the summer break, we will ask you to stay with the technical area that you want to progress to a Level 2 course in next year.
You will get to choose from the following technical skill areas:
- Animal Management
- Automotive
- Beauty Therapy
- Business
- Construction
- Computing and IT
- Early Years and Childcare
- Hair and Barbering
- Health and Social Care
- Hospitality and Catering
- Media and Games Design
- Public Services
- Travel and Tourism
