Course Overview

This VTCT NVQ qualification will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work competently as an advanced practitioner in the nail industry. Throughout this qualification, you will monitor procedures to safely control work operations, and enhance and maintain nails using UV gel, liquid and powder. You will be assessed on your occupational competence. The Level 3 Nail Services Diploma is a job-ready qualification based on National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Course Content

In this one-year course, you will learn about all the required elements to work effectively as a nail technician including: enhancing and maintaining nails using UV gel and liquid and powder.


You will also develop your understanding and skills through a number of specialist units which include: designing and creating nail art, airbrush designs, enhancing nails with electric files, promoting products and contributing to the financial effectiveness of a business. Throughout this qualification, you will also develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and nail product knowledge. You will develop a range of technical skills in nail enhancements, using various products, tools and techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills that will assist you in communicating effectively with clients.

Entry Requirement

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths and a relevant Level 2 qualification.

Assessment

This qualification is assessed and quality assured by centre staff. Work will be set to improve your practical skills, knowledge and understanding. For practical elements, you will be observed by your assessor. All your work must be collected in a portfolio of evidence and cross-referenced to requirements listed in this record of assessment book. Externally assessed question papers are completed electronically and will be set and marked by VTCT. 


You are required to produce a portfolio of evidence. A portfolio will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that have been learned. Evidence in the portfolio may take the following forms: 

  • Observed work 
  • Witness statements 
  • Audio-visual media 
  • Evidence of prior learning or attainment 
  • Written questions 
  • Oral questions 
  • Assignments 
  • Case studies

Where does this course lead to

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a nail technician. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a nail technician. Career opportunities as a nail technician exist in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Working in commercial nail and beauty
  • Working in a retail concession/nail bar
  • Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
