Course Introduction

This HNC is a university-level qualification (Level 4) delivered in partnership with the University of Portsmouth at BCoT, it is designed for people currently employed within the sector wishing to progress and to enhance their career prospects.

An HNC provides the opportunity to upgrade knowledge and skills, combining work and study and may be a more cost-effective alternative to university study. This course is equivalent second year of a full time university-level programme and is a part time day/evening release course each week.

You will gain knowledge and experience by analysing and working principles applicable to current technologies. You will develop knowledge and undertake a range of hands on projects, mixed with academic theory. During the course we will support development of key skills, including maths, problem solving, decision making, IT and communication.

The lessons will be delivered via a blended learning approach (distance learning and face to face delivery) this will be agreed with your lecturer during your first lessons.

You must have at least:-

  •  A* to C grade and/or 9 to 4 in GCSE maths (or equivalent) is strongly recommended.
  •  A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering. It is recommended that you hold this qualification at a Merit grade due to the complex level of maths that is involved.
  • A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent)
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  •  An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution
  •  Related work experience
  •  An international equivalent of the above.

Candidates must also have qualifications for English and maths at Level 2. You will be required to provide a copy of your certificates or proof that you have completed the required courses at your interview.

You will be required to attend an interview with a member of the faculty staff and to complete a maths assessment before being accepted onto the course which will be discussed during the interview.

All applicants must attempt the entry test, the links below will help you with this - you are expected to be at a certain level of maths before starting the course as you will be studying it at degree-level.
