Course Introduction
This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of vehicle systems and develop confidence in basic car maintenance.
On completion, students will be able to identify different systems and components within a car and have a basic understanding of how they work.
The course will involve theory and practical sessions which will be carried out on college vehicles or systems.

- Health & Safety
- PPE
- Tools
- Under bonnet fluid checks
Week 2 - Lifting a car, Wheels and tyres
- How to lift a car
- Use of Jacks and Axle stands
- Removing wheels & tyres
- Types of tyres
- Checking tyres
Week 3 - Disc Brakes
- Description of Hydraulic System operation and layout
- Inspecting brake pads and discs
- Removing and refitting brake pads and discs
Week 4 - Servicing
- Change oil
- Change oil filter
- Change Spark Plugs
- Change Air filter
Week 5 - Wipers Lights & Batteries
- How to change wipers
- How to change Light bulbs
- How to test battery and Alternator condition
Week 6 - Exhaust Systems & Cooling System
- How to find leaks in the exhaust
- How to repair exhausts
- How to replace exhaust parts
- How the cooling system works
- How to check the cooling system
Week 7- EV /Hybrid Safety Awareness or Strip down an engine
Week 8 - Winter Checks / Pre-MOT Checks
- Learn to check over the car ready for winter
- Learn how to check a car over before an MOT
No formal qualifications are needed.
