Course Introduction

Specialist teaching assistants support provision related to special educational needs and disability (SEND), the social and emotional wellbeing, of learners, or within another area of specialist curriculum provision such as forest schools, EAL, subject-based interventions or music education. 

This standard consists of a range of knowledge and skills linked to the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant, which progress towards the externally assessed End-point Assessment.
This will include, but is not limited to:
  • Curriculum frameworks
  • Health, safety and well-being, including safeguarding
  • Policies, process and procedures relating to collecting, storing and sharing information
  • Principles of sustainability within education, behaviours for learning, effective teamwork, effective coaching and mentoring, reflective practice 
  • Theories of learning and typical patterns of child development
  • Sources of information on research-informed evidence-based practice
  • Differences between curriculum, assessment and pedagogy 
  • Rationale, methods and approaches to planning
  • Teaching strategies to advance learning
  • Barriers to learning and strategies to overcome them
  • Principles and different methods of assessment and observation
  • Methods of recording and reporting on assessments
  • National and local SEND polices, practices, processes and procedures
  • Theoretical background to a range of SEND, principles for early identification, tools for assessment, and the impact of SEND on children and young people's learning and development.



Working in a suitable setting with a relevant previous qualification. English and maths at Level 2 preferred.
The assignments will progress to the externally marked End-point Assessment. There will be regular meeting with the dedicated Business Trainer.
