Engineering Technicians in the Aerospace, Aviation, Automotive, Maritime Defence and wider Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering sectors are predominantly involved in highly skilled, complex work and must, as a minimum be able to:
- Apply safe systems of working
- Make a technical contribution to either the design, development, quality assurance, manufacture, installation, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, systems, processes or services
- Apply proven techniques and procedures to solve engineering/manufacturing problems
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in communicating both technical and non-technical information and a commitment to continued professional development
Engineering Technicians take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake within the limits of their authority. They also need to be able to demonstrate a core set of behaviours to be competent in their job role and complement broader business strategy and development. This will enable them to support their long-term career development.
Engineered and manufactured products and systems that Engineering Technicians work on could involve mechanical, electrical, electronic, electromechanical and fluid power components/systems.
Engineering Technician, Mechatronics Engineer and Toolmaker
- Mechatronics Maintenance Technician
- Product Design and Development Technician
- Toolmaker and Tool and Die Maintenance Technician
- Technical Support Technician
Product design and developmentCompleted at college over 36 Months.
- Year 1 - Level 2 Machining (ERBL026)
- Year 2 & 3 - Either Level 3 Manufacturing Engineering Diploma (ERBL028) or Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Diploma (ERBL030)
Level 2 NVQ - EXEN024 over 18 months.Level 3 NVQ - EXEN029 over 24 months.An E-portfolio for the Endpoint Assessment from your NVQ.(details of these will be provided on the program)
Technical support
Completed at college over 36 months.
- Year 1 - Level 2 Machining (ERBL026)
- Year 2 & 3 - Either Level 3 Manufacturing Engineering Diploma (ERBL028) or Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Diploma (ERBL030)
Completed at the Workplace over 42 months.
Level 2 NVQ - EXEN024 over 18 months.Level 3 NVQ - EXEN026 over 24 months.
An E-portfolio for the Endpoint Assessment from your NVQ.(details of these will be provided on the program)
For all pathways, there is also the requirement for 20% Off the Job training (this will be agreed with the employer and training provider).
Individual employers will set the recruitment and selection criteria for their Apprenticeships.
- 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or equivalent, including mathematics, English and a science.
The workplace competency is assessed by the candidate completing a portfolio of evidence gathered from workplace activities.
The Technical certificate is assessed through the completion of college assignments.
Upon completion of the above training you will be required to complete an End Point Assessment which be delivered by the End Point assessment team.
The course offers progression to the HNC and is a recognised means of career progression within the engineering industry.
