Course Introduction

This apprenticeship will develop your maintenance and business operations knowledge, skills and behaviours in order to support the business. You will learn the operational requirements of modern integrated engineered production plant and services within the hospital plant room environment. This will include Mechanical systems, Electrical systems and Process Control systems.
You will need to apply a range of conventional skills and knowledge to undertake engineering activities on a selection of electromechanical and process control plant, systems and equipment. During this apprenticeship, you will complete academic and vocational lessons which will be delivered at BCoT, as well as develop your competence within the workplace under the guidance of a BCoT assessor.

You will complete a Level 3 City and Guilds Diploma in Engineering as part of this Apprenticeship in which you will study the following:
  • Engineering Health & Safety
  • Engineering Principles
  • Principles of Mechanical Engineering
  • Detailed Fitting of Materials
  • Manual Turning/Milling techniques
  • Maintenance of Machine Systems including pneumatics, hydraulics and specialist systems
  • Bench Fitting techniques

Whilst at the workplace, you will complete work towards evidencing a number of company-specific maintenance competencies. This will be assessed via an online portfolio.

  • 3 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher including maths, English and science, or equivalent and/or relevant experience.
The City and Guilds Diploma will be assessed via Examinations, written assessments and practical assessments. 
Your knowledge and competence will also be assessed on-site at the workplace by means of written report write-ups, observation, professional discussion, and employer witness testimony through an online portfolio system.
To complete your apprenticeship you will need to successfully pass an End Point Assessment which includes an observation and an interview.
