The apprenticeship includes learning about how Teaching Assistants support the class teacher to enhance pupils' learning either in groups or individually, to ensure pupils understand the work set and know their learning objectives to stay on task and make progress.
You will learn how to promote self-belief, social inclusion and high self-esteem as these play an integral part in pupils' well-being; ensuring pupils thrive in a positive, nurturing and safe environment.
Job roles for an apprenticeship in this sector include teaching assistant, learning support assistant, specialist support assistant and support for specialist curriculum areas.
There is also an option to add the Level 4 Teaching Assistant Higher Level Diploma. This can be discussed for advice and guidance.
The primary role of a Teaching Assistant is to be a good role model and act with honesty/integrity, and contribute to planning and class activities taking an active role towards supporting the learner to access the curriculum. You will promote Fundamental British Values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development as positive behaviours are crucial to contributing to improved pupil progress and development.
Throughout the apprenticeship you will learn:
- Understanding how pupils learn and develop - understand the need to provide feedback to support and facilitate an appropriate level of independence, comprehend learning resources and recognise different key stages of child development throughout their school years.
- Technology - recognise the importance of using appropriate technology to support learning.
- Working with teachers to understand and support assessment for learning - understand how to accurately observe, record and report pupil's participation and progress to improve practice and assessment, understand the school's assessment procedures and become familiar with assessment materials.
- Curriculum - use an appropriate knowledge of the curriculum within the context you are working in.
- Keeping Children Safe in Education - fully understand and comprehend statutory guidance: 'Keeping Children Safe in Education Part 1', safeguarding policies, prevention strategy, and understanding the importance of sharing relevant information on time with the safeguarding lead.
The Level 4 Higher-level Teaching Assistant consists of 7 units:
- Understand the Higher-level Teaching Assistant Role
- Child development and welfare
- Awareness of Special Educational Needs
- Promoting positive behaviour in children and young people.
- Providing support for individual learners and small groups.
- Developing skills to promote positive working relationships
- Curriculum planning, delivery and assessment.
- A relevant Level 2 qualification.
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths, or Level 2 Functional Skills or above.
- You will need to be employed, or find employment, in a relevant role within a school setting.
- For the Level 4 Teaching Assistant Higher Level Diploma, classroom experience is required to meet the diploma criteria.
The Teaching Assistant Standard, the apprentice will a portfolio and work towards an End-point Assessment. This may include being observed, writing assignments, looking at work products and having a professional discussion.
For their EPA they will undertake a professional discussion underpinned by their portfolio and have an observation with questions.
The Level 4 Diploma is assessed by work including essays, booklets, observation and a portfolio of evidence.
Upon completion of the apprenticeship, progression may include several different career pathways within the educational sector and higher education, including Higher-level Teaching Assistant, Assistant Teacher and Teacher.
