Course Introduction

Institute of Apprenticeships Reference Number: ST0135

This apprenticeship has been developed for those working or intending to work in early years settings. The training programme ensures that hands-on experience and learning are gained from real-life situations, with the guidance of industry professionals who ensure that young children are kept healthy and safe whilst they continue to learn and develop. This course is ideal for the apprentice to build and develop the wide-ranging skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to work with children from birth up to the age of seven. On completion, learners can work unsupervised with children and young people.

This apprenticeship consists of:

Early Years Educator Standard
  • Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Educator
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English
  • Level 3 Award in Pediatric First Aid. (RQF) or Level 3 Award in Emergency Pediatric First Aid (RQF) - Employer responsibility

End Point Assessment which includes
  • Knowledge test
  • Professional discussion underpinned by the portfolio

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths, or Level 2 Functional Skills or above.
  • You will need to be employed, or find employment in a relevant role. 

The course is aimed at those who have already completed the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Childcare, or who can demonstrate, through formal qualifications or relevant experience, a level of knowledge equivalent to that covered in Level 2.  This Level 3 Apprenticeship is particularly important if you wish to progress towards nursery management. It is also suitable for supervisors and team leaders supervising others in early years settings.

The apprentice will learn through a combination of on and off the job training. Progress will be supported and monitored by a business trainer via an e-portfolio system and a planned training, planning and assessment meeting will occur monthly.  The rest of the apprentice’s time will be spent earning and learning in the workplace where they will be supported by a mentor.


This programme is completed in 18- 24 months. 


Assessment methods gathered and used as evidence towards progress includes


  • Observations
  • Examination of case history
  • Work product evidence
  • Witness testimony
  • Questioning


These are tailored to the apprentice’s learning needs and any additional support offered as required.


All teaching, learning and assessment for the qualifications will take place in the workplace, although attendance may also be required at the college to support with Maths and English if required.

This course could lead to promotion to a Deputy Manager Role and/or advancement to a level 4 qualification.
