As a Children, Young People and Family Manager, the apprentice will lead and manage a team, demonstrating commitment within the workplace and the wider sector to help children, young people and families aspire to do their best and achieve sustainable change. They will build teams, manage resources and lead new approaches to working practices that deliver improved outcomes and put the child, young person or family at the centre of practice.

The apprentice will also give guidance to other members of the team to enhance their skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours. They will inform and improve practice by acting on research and new developments into how the needs of children, young people and families are best met.

Course Content

This apprenticeship programme includes learning about the knowledge, behaviour, and skills required for managing an organisation and teams who care for children, young people and their families. The apprentice will demonstrate team building, resource management and taking the lead on new approaches to working practices that will improve and put a child, young person or family at the centre of practice.

Some of the core competencies the apprentice will learn include: understanding the principles of long-term care and support for children and young people, understanding theoretical approaches to the practice and principles of effective multi-agency working, and understanding the national systems of social welfare.

A Level 5 Diploma will also be completed as part of the apprenticeship as follows:

Pathway 1 - Manager in Children’s Residential Care: For those working with children and young people in residential care, developing the ethos of the home and enriching long-term care.

Pathway 2 - Children, Young People and Families Manager within the Community: For those working in voluntary/community organisations who offer a specific working context (e.g. youth club, family support, special educational needs) to children, young people, and their families.

Entry Requirement

Applicants for this higher-level apprenticeship are required to have:

A relevant level 3 qualification
Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths, or Level 2 Functional Skills or above.
You will need to be employed, or find employment, in a relevant role.
An up-to-date and current disclosure and barring result

The apprentice should be working as a Manager in Children's Residential Care or as a Children, Young People and Families Manager in the Community. This could be in a range of settings, which could include local authorities' homes, health organisations, educational and early years settings or children's centres, as well as a wide range of private, voluntary and community organisations.

Assessment

Over the 2 year course the apprentice will be mentored by a fully qualified assessor who will support the apprentice to build a portfolio of evidence through attending workshops, writing essays to meet knowledge requirements, gathering of evidence through observation of practice, witness statements, reflection on own practice, professional discussions and using work products.

At the end of the qualification the apprentice will need to undertake and complete an end point assessment which consists of:

(1) Situational Judgement Test.

The Situational Judgement Test will highlight their competence in the application of the knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in the standard.

(2) Competence Interview. The apprentice will submit the portfolio at least 3 weeks before the competence interview is due to be held. The portfolio will be reviewed by the assessor and will be the subject of the competence interview.
