Course Introduction
This TQUK qualification is aimed at those working in residential childcare in a care role. Settings may include residential special schools, residential care homes and secure children's homes.
Learners will develop the knowledge skills to promote a caring, healthy, stimulating, safe and secure environment for the children and young people in their care.
Throughout this course learners will cover the underpinning knowledge and skills required for progression in this sector.
There are 17 mandatory units covering:
- Support the development of children and young people to achieve their learning potential
- Safeguarding and protection of children and young people in residential childcare
- Supporting children and young people who have experienced harm and abuse
- Support effective communication and information handling in residential childcare
- Support positive outcomes for children and young people in residential childcare
- Support positive relationships and attachments for children and young people in residential childcare
- Support the well-being and resilience of children and young people in residential childcare
- Support group living in residential childcare
- Support and promote shared risk management with children and young people in residential childcare
- Support children and young people in residential childcare to manage their health
- Assessment and planning with children and young people in residential childcare
- Support and promote the rights, diversity and equality of children and young people in residential childcare
- Support working in teams to benefit children and young people in residential childcare
- Professional development in residential childcare
- The care system and its impact on children and young people
- Residential childcare for children and young people with complex disabilities or conditions
- Working with the families of children and young people in residential childcare
Candidates should be working in a suitable environment, hold level 2 in English, maths and a level 2 healthcare or other suitable qualification. Workplace experience can be considered and discussed at an interview.
- The qualification is assessed by internally set and marked assignments and is subject to external quality assurance.
- Achievement of the qualification includes demonstration of practical skills and confirmation of workplace competence.
- The portfolio of evidence will include observations in real work situations so this has to be suitable for the setting.
This can lead to progression onto Level 5 Leadership and Management in Residential Childcare, or Level 5 Leadership for Health and Social Care.
