Course Introduction

This TQUK Distance Learning course is ideal for learners who wish to increase their awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding Prevent, including radicalisation, extremism, propaganda, social media, and the promotion of British Values, such as democracy and the rule of law. Individuals will also learn more about safeguarding and the legislation relating to it.

This course will equip learners with a detailed understanding of how to recognise and prevent radicalisation and extremism, the principles of safeguarding, the Prevent duty and its importance in society, and the importance of online safety and British Values. 

This course is split into four manageable units:
  • Unit 1:  Principles of Safeguarding - Learners will understand the definition of safeguarding and those principles that underpin the safeguarding of children, young people and adults.  The importance of safeguarding and current legislation and national policies for protection and the roles of different agencies in the protection of individuals from abuse.  You will understand the responsibilities under Prevent duty and be able to describe ways adults can safeguard children.  You will cover the different forms of abuse and recognise the signs and symptoms associated with each type of abuse.  This unit will also cover factors that contribute to individuals being more vulnerable to abuse or harm and how to report suspicions.  How to respond to disclosure of abuse and promote a zero tolerance of abuse in everyday life.

  • Unit 2:  The Prevent Duty and its Importance in Society - Learners will understand the key features of Prevent Duty and understand why this is necessary.  This unit explores the main points of counterterrorism, security and definitions of radicalisation, terrorism and extremism.  You will cover factors that can make individuals susceptible to radicalisation and warning signs.  This unit also covers the legal requirements and external groups that can support organisations and individuals.  You will also explore different ways in which extremist groups engage in criminal activity and acts of terror which have been carried out. 

  • Unit 3:  The Importance of Online Safety - This unit covers the positive uses of online activity and also the risks of negative online activity, including unsafe and illegal activity and policies relating to internet use.  This unit will cover parental controls and how social media can contribute to radicalisation and its use of spreading propaganda and contributing to grooming.  This unit will also cover signs/changes in behaviour that might indicate that an individual is experiencing online abuse. 

  • Unit 4:  The Importance of British Values - In the unit, Learners will cover legislation which supports British Values and understand democracy in relation to British Values.  You will explore behaviours and attitudes which demonstrate mutual respect, tolerance and what is meant by individual liberty.  this unit also covers how British Values can be promoted through behaviours and attitudes. 

To complete this course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:

  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • There are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will need to have a good standard of English and maths
  • Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study.
  • We recommended allowing a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week to study this course in your own time.
  • You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated timeframe of 6 months.
  • This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials.
  • You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer knowledge-based assessments that confirm your understanding of the topics.
  • We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work-based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
  • This is a level 2 qualification. Answers should be formed in paragraphs, and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences to demonstrate knowledge.
