Course Introduction

This TQUK certificate will equip learners with a detailed understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including equality and diversity in the context of SEND and legislation and guidance that helps promote this. Learners will also look at how a person-centred approach can benefit individuals living with SEND, how SEND conditions can affect learning and how to support those living with SEND and their families.

This qualification is aimed at anyone seeking to improve their knowledge of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), either for personal or professional reasons. Learners will consider many aspects of SEND, including the symptoms of specific conditions, legislation and guidance applicable to individuals with SEND and how such conditions affect individuals in daily life.

This course is split into five manageable units:


Unit 1: Introduction to Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)

  • Including the range of SEND conditions and the causes of these, social and medical models of disability, barriers that individuals with SEND might face and positive changes that have occurred over time in relation to SEND


Unit 2: Understand equality and diversity in the context of SEND

  • Including equality, diversity and inclusion within the workplace, community and wider society.  Also relevant legislation, including Safeguarding and guidance, in relation to SEND

Unit 3: Principles of promoting a person-centred approach for individuals with SEND

  • Including person-centred approach in relation to SEND and the importance of active participation for individuals and the promotion of well being


Unit 4: Understanding SEND and Learning

  • Including different learning styles and support programmes used in educational settings. Reasonable adjustments and how Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans work.


Unit 5: Living with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

  • Including neuro-diversity and self-identity; as well as how societal and cultural influences can impact on individuals with SEND.  Support available for individuals with SEND and their families, as well as the effects of stigma

This qualification is aimed at anyone who wishes to develop an in-depth knowledge of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), particularly to progress into related employment in education or health and social care settings. Anyone who currently works in the education, health and social care sectors would also benefit from the course, as well as anyone with a personal need for or interest in developing a more detailed understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

To complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:

  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • There are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will need to have a good standard of English and maths
  • Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study.
  • We recommended allowing a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week to study this course in your own time.
  • You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated timeframe of 6 months.  
  • This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials.
  • You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer the knowledge-based assessments confirming your understanding of the topics.
  • We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work-based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
  • This is a level 2 qualification, answers should be formed in paragraphs and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences demonstrating knowledge.
