Course Introduction

This qualification is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of autism. Successful completion of this qualification will allow learners to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of autism, which would support progression onto appropriate qualifications and into employment within the health and social care sector. The objectives of this qualification are to gain knowledge and understanding of autism, including: 

  • how to adopt a positive approach to supporting individuals with autism 
  • the current legislative framework relating to individuals with autism and how different theories have developed over time 
  • how to support and manage transitions for individuals with autism 
  • the range of therapeutic interventions and support available for individuals with autism and co-occurring conditions
  • how to support communication and social interaction for individuals with autism 
  • how to develop an understanding of how individuals with autism may be vulnerable and the support worker’s role and responsibilities relating to safeguarding according to legislative requirements. 

This course includes six mandatory units which you need to complete in order to gain the qualification.

  • Unit 1: Autism in context
  • Unit 2: Positive behavioural support for individuals with autism
  • Unit 3: Understand support and management of transitions for individuals with autism
  • Unit 4: Therapeutic interventions and support available for individuals with autism and co-occurring conditions
  • Unit 5: Communication and social interaction with individuals with autism
  • Unit 6: Safeguarding and resilience in autism
To be eligible to study this level 3 qualification at BCoT
  • Learners will already have achieved a level 2 qualification in Autism or a related subject.
  • Learners have achieved a level 2 or equivalent in English 
  • Learners will be required to provide a written statement explaining why they wish to undertake this level 3 and how this course will benefit them.

To complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:
  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above

Funding for this course is allocated by confirmation of one of the following:
  • You are in receipt of Universal Credit, confirmed by proof of your most recent statement
  • Proof of earning below £34,000, confirmed with two recent wage slips


Learners who are not eligible for funding are able to access this course with an Advance Learner Loan.

  • Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study
  • We recommended allowing a minimum of 6 to 7 hours per week to study this course in your own time.
  • You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated timeframe of 9 months.  
  • This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials.
  • You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer the knowledge based assessments confirming your understanding of the topics.
  • We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
  • This is a level 3 qualification, answers should be formed in paragraphs and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences demonstrating knowledge.

This course includes seven mandatory units which you need to complete in order to gain the qualification.

  • Level 3 Diploma for the Children’s Workforce (Early Years Educator) 
  • Level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care 
  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England 
  • Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (England) 
  • Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support Services 
  • Level 3 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support 
  • Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care (England) 
  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools 
  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools 
  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training Career opportunities

By completing the qualification, learners will develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of autism which could support progression onto appropriate qualifications, and into relevant employment in the health and social care sector.
