Course Introduction

This course is designed to increase learners’ awareness and understanding of diabetes. By completing the qualification, learners will develop in-depth knowledge of diabetes which could support progression onto appropriate qualifications, and into relevant employment, in the health and social care sector. 

The objectives of this qualification are to gain knowledge and understanding of diabetes, including:
  • the types, causes, signs and symptoms of diabetes 
  • anatomy and physiology 
  • the impact of diabetes on individuals, others and society 
  • the treatment and management of diabetes 
  • common complications of diabetes

This course includes four units which you need to complete to qualify. 

  • Unit 01 Understand diabetes -
In this unit, learners will gain an understanding of diabetes as a metabolic disease; the types, causes, signs and symptoms, and associated anatomy and normal physiology. 

  • Unit 02 Diabetes in context -
In this unit, learners will gain an understanding of the wider context of diabetes and its consequences for society, the individual, their family and friends. 

  • Unit 03 Understand the treatment and management of diabetes -
In this unit, learners will gain an understanding of the treatment and management of diabetes. They will also consider the benefits of a healthy diet, exercise and lifestyle and the role of, and sources of, support. 

  • Unit 04 Understand the complications of diabetes - 
In this unit, learners will gain a detailed understanding of the range of common complications of diabetes and the consequences on physical health for the individual. 
To be eligible to study this level 3 qualification at BCoT
  • Learners will already have achieved a level 2 qualification in Autism or a related subject.
  • Learners have achieved a level 2 or equivalent in English 
  • Learners will be required to provide a written statement explaining why they wish to undertake this level 3 and how this course will benefit them.

To complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:
  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above

Funding for this course is allocated by confirmation of one of the following:

  • You are in receipt of Universal Credit, confirmed by proof of your most recent statement
  • Proof of earning below £34,000, confirmed with two recent Wage Slips


Learners who are not eligible for funding can access this course with an Advance Learner Loan.
To confirm eligibility please complete an application and our team will be in touch.
  • Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study.
  • We recommended allowing a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week to study this course in your own time.
  • You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated 6 months.
  • This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials. 
  • You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer knowledge-based assessments that confirm your understanding of the topics.
  • We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work-based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
  • This is a level 2 qualification, answers should be formed in paragraphs and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences demonstrating knowledge.
Achievement of this qualification will help support progression into a variety of job roles and occupational areas within health and social care, or roles in other sectors which support people with diabetes.

Successful completion will help support several job roles within the health and social care sector as you may be working with people who have diabetes, or may be at risk of developing diabetes, in your day-to-day role, for example:

  • Healthcare Support Service Worker
  • Clinical Healthcare Support Worker
  • Nursing Assistant
  • Health Education/Health Promotion Worker
  • Healthcare Assistants/Support Workers in community and primary care environments
  • Personal Assistants are employed directly by the individuals they support or their families

You could also progress to the following apprenticeships:

  • Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care
  • Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Health (Clinical Healthcare Support)
  • Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Health (Healthcare Support Services)
