Course Introduction

This qualification is designed to provide learners with an understanding of end-of-life care.

This qualification aims to help identify, develop and formally recognise knowledge and skills surrounding the care of a dying person. The principles of end-of-life care level 2 will also cover how to support friends and families during this sensitive and emotionally demanding time of life.  The course is suitable for those considering employment within health and social care or looking to develop within a current job role in health and social care.

This course consists of the following six mandatory units, all of which must be completed in order to achieve the qualification.

  • Unit 1: Understand how to work in end of life care

Learn about different attitudes towards death and dying, the varying approaches (and their individual aims) to end of life care, and the support services available to people undertaking such a role.

  • Unit 2: Care planning in end of life care

Gain an understanding of the holistic approach to end of life care, person-centred assessment and care planning considering the many needs of individuals nearing the end of life.

  • Unit 3: Understand how to provide support to manage pain and discomfort

Learn the knowledge and skills required in order to provide support for managing pain and discomfort. This includes how to minimise pain through a range of different techniques and the approaches to managing pain.

  • Unit 4: End of life care and dementia

Gain an acute awareness of the impact dementia can have on an individual's end of life care and also learn how to support those individuals, as well as their family and close friends.

  • Unit 5: Understanding the role of the care worker in time of death

Explore the role of a care worker around the time of death of an individual. Focusing primarily on how to support an individual, how to care for a deceased individual and existing legislation around this subject are all examined in this module.

  • Unit 6: Understand loss and grief in end of life care

Consider the complex nature of loss and grief, gaining an understanding of how to support people following bereavement and how to best manage their feelings of loss and grief.

You don’t need any specific prior learning requirements to take this course, but you may find it helpful if you’ve already achieved a level 1 qualification within the health and social care area.
To complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:
  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • There are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will need to have a good standard of English and maths
  • Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study.
  • We recommended allowing a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week to study this course in your own time
  • You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated timeframe of 6 months.
  • This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials.
  • You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer knowledge-based assessments that confirm your understanding of the topics.
  • We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work-based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
  • This is a level 2 qualification, answers should be formed in paragraphs and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences demonstrating knowledge.
  • Learners are allocated a marker, who will provide feedback and guidance on all assessment submissions.
