Course Introduction

This qualification is designed to develop learners' knowledge and understanding of dyslexia, ADHD, and other specific learning difficulties.  It aims to help develop knowledge of several different specific learning difficulties, how they are diagnosed and how individuals can be supported.  It also covers how to understand the positive aspects and strengths of individuals with specific learning difficulties in addition to exploring the barriers they may face.

The units and topics included are ideal for learners looking to support individuals with specific learning difficulties in any environment, be it at home, in the workplace, or in schools.

This course consists of the following four mandatory units, all of which need to be achieved to complete the full qualification.

Unit 1: Signs, symptoms and diagnosis of Specific Learning Difficulties

Develop an understanding of common Specific Learning Difficulties, recognise signs that may indicate a Specific Learning Difficulty and understand the importance of a professional diagnosis.

Unit 2: Sources of information, support, legislation and guidance relevant to Specific Learning Difficulties

Gain an understanding of legislation and guidance that is relevant to individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties and the roles and responsibilities of those involved in protecting the rights of those individuals.

Unit 3: Living with a Specific Learning Difficulty

Develop an understanding of the experiences of those living with a Specific Learning Difficulty, how society impacts those individuals and the impact of an individual's learning difficulty on those around them. Within this unit, you will also look to understand the positive contributions that can be made by individuals with a Specific Learning Difficulty in different environments.

Unit 4: Best Practice Relating to Specific Learning Difficulties

Within this unit, you will understand the best practices in providing support to and protecting individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties.

To complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:


  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • There are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will need to have a good standard of English and maths

  • Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study. 
  • We recommended allowing a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week to study this course in your own time.
  • You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated timeframe of 6 months. 
  • This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials.
  • You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer knowledge-based assessments that confirm your understanding of the topics.
  • We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work-based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
  • This is a level 2 qualification, answers should be formed in paragraphs and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences demonstrating knowledge.
  • Learners are allocated a Marker, who will provide feedback and guidance on all assessment submissions.
