Course Introduction

This qualification is designed for learners looking to start work in, or already working in health and social care, who would like an understanding of common health conditions and their effects on individuals. 

This qualification aims to develop the learner’s knowledge and understanding of the various common health conditions, monitoring the health of individuals affected by health conditions, and prepare learners for further training and to support a role in the workplace where the individual may work or interact with those experiencing different health conditions.

This course consists of 6 units. 

  • Unit 1: Understand How to Contribute to Monitoring the Health of Individuals Affected by Health Conditions - The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of monitoring the health of individuals affected by health conditions, including the observation, recording and reporting of these. It will also help learners to gain knowledge of the responses needed when there are changes to an individual’s condition. 

  • Unit 2: Understand Cardiovascular Disease - The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of the cardiovascular system and different forms of cardiovascular disease, including their signs, symptoms, causes and risk factors. It will also help learners gain knowledge of the effects on an individual’s daily life and the treatment and management options available.

  • Unit 3: Stroke Awareness - The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of the different types of stroke, their signs, symptoms and effect on the individual. It will help learners to gain knowledge of the response required in the event of an emergency, how to manage a stroke and the support that is available following a stroke. 

  • Unit 4: Arthritis Awareness - The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of the different types of arthritis, their causes, signs and symptoms. It will also help learners to gain knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment, support and management of arthritis. 

  • Unit 5: Understand Physical Disability - The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of the different forms of physical disability, their causes and the impact they have. It will help learners gain an understanding of the attitudes those individuals with physical disability face and how to help support them manage their disability and maintain independence.

  • Unit 6: Parkinson's Disease Awareness - The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of Parkinson’s disease and its underlying causes, the signs and symptoms of the condition and its impact. It will also help learners gain an understanding of treatment options, support services and strategies for managing the condition. 

You don’t need to have any specific prior learning requirements to take this course, but you may find it helpful if you’ve already achieved a level 1 qualification within the health and social care area.


In order to complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:

  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • There are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will need to have a good standard of English and maths
  • Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study.
  • We recommended allowing a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week to study this course in your own time.
  • You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated 6 months.
  • This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials. 
  • You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer knowledge-based assessments that confirm your understanding of the topics.
  • We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work-based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
  • This is a level 2 qualification, answers should be formed in paragraphs and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences demonstrating knowledge.
