Course Introduction

This qualification is designed for anyone seeking to increase their knowledge of end-of-life care in a vocational setting. It is aimed at those working in the healthcare sector whose job description includes caring for those with a life-limiting illness.

This qualification is also appropriate for those who have already achieved other sector-specific qualifications in the healthcare sector and need to apply their understanding in a palliative care context.

This qualification aims to:
  • provide learners with a definition of end-of-life care
  • explore common questions and themes in end-of-life care
  • inform learners of the range of possible approaches to end-of-life care
  • provide learners with an understanding of how to support a person’s
  • familial, spiritual, social and emotional needs
  • prepare the learner to confront issues of death and bereavement

There are five mandatory units for this course:

  • Unit 1 - Understanding End-of-Life Care 
This unit provides learners with an overview of the emotive issues surrounding death and dying. It will also help learners understand palliative care and its place within end-of-life care, along with the support services available to the individual and others.
 
  • Unit 2 - Communication During End-of-Life Care
This unit aims to give learners an understanding of the importance of communication when supporting an individual and others during end-of-life care. 

  • Unit 3 - Assessment and Care Planning in End-of-Life Care
This unit aims to give the learner an understanding of the person-centred approach to assessment and care planning within end-of-life care, and the legal implications of any advance care-planning decisions. 

  • Unit 4 - Person-Centred Approaches to End-of-Life Care
This unit will inform learners of the person-centred approach to end-of-life care and how it ensures that the individual’s physical, emotional, social and cultural needs are met. 

  • Unit 5 - Care During the Final Hours of Life and Bereavement Care
This unit will assist learners in understanding approaches to providing care in the approach to death and the final hours of care. It will also provide an understanding of the processes of loss and grief, how to support those who are bereaved, and how to cope with their feelings of stress and grief.

To be eligible to study this level 3 qualification at BCoT
  • Learners will already have achieved a level 2 qualification in Autism or a related subject.
  • Learners have achieved a level 2 or equivalent in English 
  • Learners must provide a written statement explaining why they wish to undertake this level 3 and how this course will benefit them.

To complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:
  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above

Funding for this course is allocated by confirmation of one of the following:

  • You are in receipt of Universal Credit, confirmed by proof of your most recent statement
  • Proof of earning below £34,000, confirmed with two recent Wage Slips


Learners who are not eligible for funding can access this course with an Advance Learner Loan.

  • Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study. 
  • We recommended allowing a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week to study this course in your own time.
  • You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated timeframe of 6 months. 
  • This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials.
  • You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer knowledge-based assessments that confirm your understanding of the topics.
  • We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work-based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
  • This is a level 2 qualification, answers should be formed in paragraphs and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences demonstrating knowledge.
  • Learners are allocated a marker, who will provide feedback and guidance on all assessment submissions.
Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to the following qualifications:
  • Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care (England)
  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care
  • Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health
  • Level 3 Certificate in Understanding the Principles of Dementia Care
