Course Introduction

This BTEC qualification develops the knowledge and skills needed when working in a lead adult care worker role in care settings. It covers a wide range of areas including supporting individuals with their physical and emotional care, daily living needs and health and social care procedures.

You will need to complete both mandatory units plus optional knowledge & competency units. The mandatory units include:
  • Promote communication in care settings
  • Promote personal development in care settings
  • Promote equality and inclusion in care settings
  • Duty of care in care settings
  • Safeguarding and protection in care settings
  • Responsibilities of a care worker
  • Promote person-centred approaches in care settings
  • Promote health, safety and wellbeing in care settings
  • Promote effective handling of information in care settings

Optional units will be selected to meet learner and/or employer requirements..


  • You need to be aged 18+ to study this course.
  • Completion of the Level 2 Care Diploma is recommended. 
  • A good standard of English and maths is required, which will be monitored via an initial assessment at enrolment. 
  • This is a National Vocational Qualification and the candidate needs to be currently working in a care setting and have 3-6 months of work experience.

This diploma is delivered in the workplace using a variety of assessments collected throughout the course.  
Assessment methods include: 
  • Workplace observations
  • Witness testimonies
  • Professional discussion
  • Oral and written questions
  • Work product evidence
Learners need the support of their setting for observations and witness testimonies to take place at the setting.
You can progress onto a Level 4 Adult Care Diploma.
